In continuing a look at some of the different companies and people involved in bringing all of us some entertaining comics, this week features ATLANTIS STUDIOS. They're involved in a number of different things.
Atlantis Studios is a sequential art studio dedicated to developing professional, high-quality science fiction, fantasy, and action-adventure custom comics, comics promoting products or licensed properties, as well as specialty illustrations and storyboards for film producers and video game developers.
While Atlantis Studios is largely a work-for-hire studio that produces comics for a variety of third-party publishers, Atlantis Studios does publish a handful of creator-owned and partnership titles:
TALES OF LARA CROFT ? Published through permission of Eidos Interactive in support of their Tomb Raider franchise, this quarterly 48-page comic features the best fan comics from all over the world. Published quarterly and distributed both through retailers and on-line exclusively at Planet Lara. TLC is a quarterly 48-page comic dedicated to showcasing original fan-created art and stories featuring Lara Croft and other characters from the Tomb Raider video games and movies. It is a non-profit publication that encourages aspiring comic book artists and writers to create exciting new stories with great visual appeal! Planet Lara is the exclusive distributor for Tales of Lara Croft.
PAULA PERIL ? An original action-packed ?artist showcase? series written by James Watson features the cliffhanger adventures of a beautiful big city reporter who finds herself in the middle of every story she covers, be it ruthless gangsters or supernatural mysteries. Paula Peril is Nancy Drew meets Indiana Jones, thoroughly modern, but her determination to uncover the truth and expose each dastardly villain inevitably puts her ? or her friends - in mortal peril each issue. The series is an intentional nod to ?Perils of Pauline?, and to the 40s pulp magazines and 70s comics that it resembles artistically.
TALISMEN ? A creator-owned series by Barb Jacobs and Steven Jones, featuring lush computer colors in the style of shojo manga, but Jacob?s style is also reminiscent of Disney and Chuck Jones cartoons. TALISMEN: RETURN OF THE EXILE is an 88-page graphic novel that began publication as a four issue limited-edition comic for the U.S. direct market beginning in October 2005 and as a graphic novel for the retail market in the summer of 2006.
TINN MAN ? An original print series by prolific artist and writer Daniel Hogan. The series follows the adventures of Victoria Bernelli, a talented A.I. programmer who uncovers the truth about her corrupt and murderous employer. She hides his secrets within the steel-encased body of a robot she has programmed to protect her: TINN MAN, her relentless bodyguard, companion, and friend. Running for her life, Victoria discovers more than she expected to about her corrupt employer, her robotic protector, and herself. The first issue ships in May 2006.
CUSTOM COMICS:
Making dreams a reality, Atlantis Custom Comics are the complete package ? a full-length full color or black-and-white comic made entirely to the creator?s specifications in 90 days! Once Atlantis is contacted with the comic ideas, scripts, sketches or whatever else can help guide the process, they will prepare a finished outline, script, and layouts ? all in collaboration with the creator, then proceed to finished art.
